A spring safety checklist surrounded by blue skies with white clouds, daisies, and green gras, and a vehicle with a first aid kit and emergency supplies

As winter fades and the weather starts to warm up, most of us are focused on getting outside, cleaning up, and getting back into routines that don't involve snow and ice. But spring isn't just a change in season - it's also the perfect time to reset your approach to safety at home and in your daily life.

Over the winter months, a lot changes without us noticing. Walkways shift, equipment gets worn down, first aid supplies get used up, and routines fall out of practice. Taking a bit of time at the start of spring to check in on these things can prevent injuries and give you peace of mind going into the warmer months.

Start With Your Outdoor Spaces

One of the biggest risks in early spring is uneven or damaged walking surfaces. Freeze-thaw cycles can cause cracks, shifting stones, and loose steps that aren't always obvious at first glance.

Take a walk around your property and look for:

  • Cracked or uneven pavement

  • Loose railings or steps

  • Areas where water pools and could become slippery

Fixing small issues now can prevent falls later - especially as more people start spending time outside.

Check Your Safety Equipment

Winter tends to be a high-use season for certain safety items, especially first aid kits and emergency supplies. Spring is a great time to restock and refresh.

Open your first aid kit and check for:

  • Used or missing supplied

  • Expired items (especially medications)

  • Items that need replacing, like gloves or bandages

It's also a good time to test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. These devices often get overlooked, but they play a critical role in home safety year-round.

Spring Safety and Your Vehicle

Your car goes through a lot in the winter, and spring driving comes with a different set of hazards.

Take a few minutes to:

  • Clear out winter clutter and check your emergency kit - if you need one, contact us!

  • Replace or restock items like flashlights, batteries, and first aid supplies

  • Check tire condition, especially if you've been driving on rough winter roads

Spring also brings more pedestrians, cyclists, and children playing outside. Adjusting your awareness - especially in neighbourhoods - is just as important as adjusting your vehicle.

Rebuild Safety Habits

One of the less obvious impacts of winter is how it affects our habits. We move differently, spend more time indoors, and sometimes become less aware of our surroundings.

Spring is a good time to rebuild those habits:

A Simple Reset Goes a Long Way

Safety doesn't require a complete overhaul. In most cases, it's about small, intentional actions - checking what's changed, fixing what needs attention, and getting back into good habits.

Taking an hour or two at the start of the season can prevent injuries, reduce stress, and help you enjoy everything spring has to offer with confidence.
